Diabetes is a chronic disease affecting over 400 million people around the world. WHO projections put diabetes as the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.
At HEALTHIO 2017 we were fortunate to have different solutions and companies on the itinerary: Simplifying the control of Diabetes and in the diabetes-related agora-chats.
Roche Diabetes Care: David Labajo, director of the Health Solutions & Services unit at Roche Diabetes Care, presented his vision of the unstoppable process health is undergoing as a consequence of digital and technology transformations and the way that Roche is implementing this sea change in the field of diabetes.
Social Diabetes: the leading diabetes app in Spanish, aims to empower the patient; to put the technology at the patient’s disposal and to give patients the knowledge they need to control their disease. The app, created by Victor Bautista, boosts patient autonomy by giving them control over key areas such as blood sugar levels and food. It also offers users the possibility of real-time contact with their attending physician to facilitate remote treatment.

Virtual Nurse app Infermera Virtual (IV) has been offering health advice for many years, including diabetes-related tips that are greatly appreciated by the community. Now it is gearing up to take part in HEALTHIO 2018 as the first app accredited by the Catalan health authorities.
The company Alteraid showcased “careUP”, a personal medical-history app adapted to diabetes patients that can interact with the different European Union health systems to give patient and health provider the medical history needed, regardless of where they meet and the language they speak.
Different hospitals took part in HEALTHIO, including Hospital Vall d’ Hebron, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu and Hospital Germans Trias, providing multiple experiences about diabetes patients and the research their departments are conducting and, most importantly of all, demonstrating a keenness to listen to patients’ needs.
HEALTHIO 2018:
HEALTHIO 2018 was the backdrop for confirming that the Simplifying Diabetes Control itinerary would include other stakeholders such as Social Diabetes, the redGDPS Foundation, and Infermera Virtual.
All of these companies, associations, and foundations will perform outreach activities to ensure proper diabetes control.
There will also be a workshop on the 21st Century Family Doctor’s Bag featuring different diabetes-related technology. The event will be open to health providers only and we can confirm the presence of different diabetes control tools, including a presentation of the FreeStyle Libre glucose monitoring system from Abbott.
